Articulating vs Telescopic EWP Booms: Which Type Suits Your Job?

Articulating booms fold around obstacles and reach over obstructions. Telescopic booms extend further with cleaner reach. The job determines which one you need.

Truck-mounted elevated work platforms come in two main boom configurations: articulating and telescopic. Both lift a person to height, but they do it differently — and the difference matters enormously for certain jobs. Choosing the wrong configuration can mean the machine cannot physically reach the work point, even if its working height and reach numbers look right on paper.

Articulating booms

An articulating boom has two or more sections joined at a knuckle point. The lower section rises from the turntable; the upper section — the jib — can angle independently. This design allows the machine to fold up, reach over an obstacle (like a building parapet, a fence or a tree), and position the basket on the far side of something the truck cannot park next to.

Articulating booms are commonly over-center, meaning the jib can angle past the vertical. This lets the platform work below the level of the knuckle point — useful for reaching into roof gutters, over the edge of a mezzanine, or into confined wall cavities.

The trade-off is complexity. Articulating machines have more hydraulic cylinders, more pivot points, and generally a larger mechanical footprint than a straight telescopic boom of similar height.

Telescopic booms

A telescopic boom extends from a single base section like a collapsible antenna. The platform rises in a cleaner arc — with less horizontal variation as it lifts — making it well-suited to direct overhead access where the truck can park close to the work point.

Telescopic designs typically achieve greater horizontal reach for a given height rating because the boom is a single straight line at full extension, without the geometry losses introduced by the articulating knuckle. For overhead line work, telecoms, and facade access with clear approach paths, a telescopic machine often covers more ground per repositioning.

Over-center capability

Many articulating machines — and some telescopic ones — are described as over-center. This means the upper boom can angle past vertical, allowing the platform to be positioned below the peak height. For working over rooflines, into light wells, or alongside structures with overhanging elements, over-center capability is often essential.

Choosing between the two

Use an articulating boom when:

  • You need to reach over an obstacle — a fence, parapet, tree canopy or building edge.
  • Access is restricted: you cannot park the truck directly below or beside the work point.
  • The job requires working below the boom's peak height (over-center positions).
  • The work spans multiple angles and approach directions from one setup point.

Use a telescopic boom when:

  • You have clear, direct access to the work point — nothing to fold around.
  • Maximum horizontal reach is the priority over obstacle navigation.
  • Speed of setup is important — telescopic machines are generally simpler to position.
  • The job is repetitive and predictable: the machine goes up, does the work, comes down.
