A truck-mounted elevating work platform is really two machines sharing one chassis: a road vehicle that has to pass the same checks as any other truck, and an access unit that has to meet the standards for elevating work platforms. Owners who look after one stream while assuming the other takes care of itself are the ones who get caught out — usually at the boundary where the two systems meet. This guide sets out both maintenance streams, why each matters, and the points that quietly fall through the gap between the workshop that services trucks and the specialist who inspects access plant.
Two machines, two regimes
The road vehicle beneath the boom is subject to the ordinary obligations that apply to any commercial truck: registration, roadworthiness and the servicing that keeps engine, driveline, brakes, steering, tyres and lights in condition. That is a familiar world for most fleet workshops.
The access unit sitting on the deck answers to a different framework. Its structure, hydraulics, safety devices and control systems fall under the inspection regime for elevating work platforms, with checks before use, routine servicing on its maintenance schedule, periodic assessment, and the deep major that falls due according to its equipment class. The two regimes run on different intervals, use different competencies, and produce different records — and both must be kept current for the vehicle to work legally and safely.
Looking after the road vehicle
The vehicle stream is easy to underestimate because the truck spends much of its working day stationary with the boom in the air. But the base still has to be roadworthy to get to site, and the systems that keep it stable while working overlap with the vehicle's own components.
Core vehicle attention points:
- Engine, cooling and driveline servicing on the manufacturer's schedule, remembering that idling to run the hydraulic system counts as engine hours the odometer never shows.
- Brakes, steering and suspension, which carry the weight of the mounted unit and must be sound both on the road and when the vehicle is set up to work.
- Tyres and wheel rims for wear, damage and correct pressure, since they bear on stability as well as roadworthiness.
- Lights, indicators and the electrical base the truck depends on, kept in order so a compliant vehicle is not sidelined by a minor fault.
Looking after the EWP unit
The access unit needs the full inspection hierarchy in its own right, independent of whatever the vehicle workshop has done. Pre-starts before use, routine servicing at the scheduled frequency, a periodic inspection and the class-based major all apply to the platform, boom and their systems.
The unit's recurring needs:
- Hydraulics — hoses, cylinders, seals and holding valves kept in condition, with any drift treated as a fault rather than a quirk.
- Structure — boom sections, pins, bushes and the slew bearing kept lubricated and watched for play, wear and cracking.
- Safety devices — interlocks, emergency lowering and the platform load system function-tested so they work when they are needed.
- The outriggers or stabilisers that make the whole assembly safe to lift from, kept clean, lubricated and reliably deploying.
The stabiliser and interface: where the two streams meet
The most instructive part of a truck-mounted unit is the boundary between the vehicle and the access plant. The outriggers, the subframe that mounts the unit to the chassis, and the power take-off that drives the hydraulics from the engine all belong to neither regime cleanly, which is exactly why they get neglected.
Outriggers depend on firm ground and correct deployment for the machine to be safe to work from, so their pads, cylinders and interlocks deserve genuine attention rather than a passing glance. The subframe mounting carries the loads from boom to chassis and can develop cracking or loosening that a vehicle service will not look for and an EWP inspection might assume is the truck's business. Someone has to own that interface.
Common neglect points
The failures that catch out truck-mounted units cluster in predictable places — usually where each maintenance stream assumes the other is handling it.
- Engine hours run up by idling to power the hydraulics, which age the vehicle faster than the odometer implies and are easily overlooked in a distance-based service plan.
- The subframe and mounting between vehicle and unit, where corrosion, cracking or loosening sits in nobody's clear remit.
- Cylinder rods on outriggers and the boom left exposed and unretracted, scoring and corroding until they chew out their seals.
- Records kept for one stream but not the other, so the truck is roadworthy but the EWP inspection has lapsed, or vice versa, and the vehicle cannot lawfully work.
Keeping both streams current together
The way to run a truck-mounted fleet well is to accept that both regimes exist and give each a clear owner and record. The vehicle needs its roadworthiness and servicing; the access unit needs its full inspection hierarchy; and the interface between them needs someone who is specifically looking at it rather than assuming it is covered.
