Choosing a Scissor Lift for Warehouse Work

How to match a scissor lift to indoor warehouse work — working height, deck size, aisle widths, floor loading, power source and the compliance regime it joins.

A warehouse is one of the most forgiving environments an EWP can work in — flat slab, no weather, predictable tasks — which is exactly why the wrong scissor lift choice tends to hide until it costs money. A machine that cannot fit the aisles, reach the top racking or run a full shift on charge turns a simple purchase or hire into a daily frustration. This guide works through the questions that actually determine which scissor lift suits warehouse work, whether you intend to hire one or add one to the fleet.

Start from the task, not the machine

The right machine falls out of an honest description of the work. Racking maintenance at the top level, lighting and sprinkler work at the ceiling, stocktake access and general building maintenance all imply different working heights, deck loads and durations at height.

Pin these down before looking at any model:

  • The true working height required — the height of the task plus the reach of the person, not just the platform height on the brochure.
  • How many people and how much material the deck must carry at once, which drives the platform capacity you need.
  • How long the machine works at height per shift, which shapes battery and charging requirements.
  • Whether the task needs the platform to extend over obstructions — many scissor decks extend, but only so far.

Dimensions decide more than height does

In a warehouse, the machine's footprint matters as much as its reach. A scissor lift that cannot travel a racking aisle, pass through a roller door or turn at the end of a run is the wrong machine no matter how well it lifts.

Measure the narrowest aisle, the lowest door and the tightest turn the machine must make — including any mezzanine or lift access if it needs to change levels — and check them against the machine's stowed dimensions, not its optimistic marketing profile. Slab capacity deserves the same respect: point loads from a loaded scissor lift on a suspended or mezzanine floor are a structural question, and one to answer with the building's documentation rather than an assumption.

Electric drive is the default indoors

For enclosed warehouse work, battery-electric scissor lifts are the standard answer: no exhaust emissions in an enclosed space, low noise for shared workplaces, and non-marking tyres that leave the slab presentable. Engine-powered machines belong outdoors or in ventilation conditions specifically assessed for them.

The practical questions with an electric machine are about the duty cycle — whether the battery genuinely lasts the shift pattern you run, where the machine will charge, and whether the charging circuit is suitable. A machine that spends the busiest hours of the day on charge is undersized for the operation even if it is perfectly sized for the task.

The compliance regime comes with the machine

A scissor lift working indoors carries the same obligations under AS 2550.10 as any other mobile elevating work platform: operator pre-start checks before use, routine inspection and maintenance, periodic inspection by a competent person, and the 10-year major inspection driven by the machine's date of manufacture.

If you buy, those obligations are yours to schedule and document. If you hire, the machine should arrive with its inspection status current and its logbook in order — and it is entirely reasonable to ask the hire provider to show you both before the machine goes to work. Either way, operators still complete and record a pre-start check every day the machine is used.

Hire first, buy on evidence

If the warehouse workload is new or uncertain, hiring the candidate machine for a period is the cheapest research available. A few weeks of real use answers the questions no specification sheet can: whether the deck size suits the tasks, whether the battery survives the shift, and whether the aisles are as generous as the drawings claimed.
