The practical trap is judging a unit by its lift count. A machine that has done only a few jobs this month can have driven thousands of kilometres to reach them, banking road cycles the whole way. A fatigue crack that began at a stress-raiser lengthens with each of those cycles until the sound metal around it gives out, and then it separates without warning, at height, with someone in the basket.
How the Territory environment attacks a truck unit

The subframe that ties the turret to the truck, the pedestal base beneath the slewing structure, the outrigger legs and their pivots, and the chassis attachment bolts and torsion boxes are all places where a crack can grow unseen. A visual check is not a safety net here
Operators should absolutely check the machine before use, and it is a habit worth keeping, but a walk-around cannot find a fatigue crack in a subframe or pedestal because the cracks that matter are hidden below the surface or under paint and dust.
Detecting them depends on the layered inspection regime and its deepest tier, the major inspection — due at five years or ten years depending on the equipment class — where critical welds and members are exposed and non-destructive testing is applied to reveal what no visual pass can. That is how a hidden crack becomes a documented, measurable finding. A cherry picker truck without current certification has simply not had that assurance done, so its structure is unproven for whatever it lifts next.

The Northern Territory is part of the harmonised model work health and safety scheme, and NT WorkSafe is the regulator.
