The Dangers of Operating a Cracked Cherry Picker Truck in Queensland

The mechanical reality behind why a truck-mounted elevating work platform with a developing crack is a serious hazard on Queensland roads and sites, and the consequences a failure brings for the business responsible.

Queensland work sends a cherry picker truck a long way — suburban jobs around Brisbane and the Gold Coast, coastal humidity along the seaboard, and dust and distance out into regional country. All of that travel is hard on the access unit bolted to the truck, and much of the damage it does is the kind nobody sees coming. A truck-mounted platform holds a worker in the air on the strength of steel that is aged by the road as well as by lifting. The road does the damage before the boom ever lifts

It is tempting to judge a cherry picker truck by how often it has actually put a worker in the air. That measure misses most of the story. Every kilometre the truck drives feeds vibration and flex into the subframe, the pedestal and the outrigger stowage, and Queensland's long regional runs and rough coastal roads pour those cycles in steadily. The machine is being worked hard on the highway long before anyone climbs into the basket.

This is why a low lift count is no reassurance on a truck-mounted unit. A travel tower that has driven a great many kilometres between short jobs has accumulated fatigue in its mounting steel that a self-propelled machine of the same age simply would not carry. The road duty is invisible in the lift log, but it is very much present in the metal.

No warning, no recovery when a mount lets go

The defining hazard of a truck-mounted platform is the combination of height and suddenness. When a load-bearing element in the boom or its mounting finally fails, it fails abruptly, and the operator is standing on the outcome. There is no gradual sag that lets a crew lower the platform and reconsider — a subframe weld, a pedestal or an outrigger holds until it does not, and the moment it does not is the moment someone falls.

That is what separates access plant from almost everything else on a Queensland site. A fault that would be an inconvenience on the ground can cause a fall from height purely because of where the person is standing when it gives way. Every inspection requirement traces back to this single fact: the only useful time to find the fault is before the lift.

Where cracks are born on a truck-mounted unit

Structural cracks on a travel tower do not appear fully formed. They initiate where the machine concentrates stress and grow by fatigue, one small increment for every cycle the unit works — and on a cherry picker truck the cycles arrive from both lifting and driving.

The crack sites specific to a truck-mounted platform include:

  • The subframe-to-chassis connection, worked by road flex in one direction and lifting loads in another.
  • The pedestal or turret carrying the slew bearing, taking the full overturning moment of an extended boom.
  • Outrigger legs, feet and pivots that jack the loaded vehicle and then react against every lift.
  • Slew-bearing bolt circles and boom pivots, where Queensland's coastal salt can seed corrosion right where fatigue prefers to start.

The slow damage of doing without maintenance

A truck-mounted machine that misses its maintenance is not standing still — it is degrading, and Queensland's coastal salt and inland grit only speed the process. Corrosion attacks the very subframe weld toes where fatigue cracks like to start, so a maintenance gap quietly becomes a structural weakness. Ungreased slew bearings and pins develop play, and mounting fasteners left unchecked can loosen until the whole assembly works against itself.

The hydraulic side rots just as quietly under constant road vibration. Hoses stiffen and split, cylinder seals wear until a raised platform sinks on its own, and holding valves that should lock the boom in position begin to bypass. The outrigger circuit can lose the firmness that keeps the vehicle planted, undermining the stable base a lift depends on. Every one of these is a safety function fading a little at a time, right up until one gives way with a person aboard.

Certification is the only honest report on the hidden access equipment

The parts most likely to cause a serious fall on a truck-mounted platform are the ones an operator can never inspect — the concealed subframe welds, the pedestal base, the outrigger internals and the load-holding hydraulics. Certification closes that gap: a competent person examines those hidden systems against AS/NZS 1418.10 for design and AS 2550.10 for safe use and records whether they are sound. A roadworthy carrier proves the truck is legal to drive, not that the access unit is fit to lift.

That regime is layered, with routine and periodic checks — timed by the manual, the workload and a competent person rather than a fixed cadence — beneath the deep major inspection. The major inspection is the strip-down that goes hunting for hidden fatigue cracking, and it comes due at a 5-year or 10-year point depending on the machine's class. When certification lapses, that verdict expires with it. The unit has not been declared sound or unsound — it has simply become unknown, and an unknown boom over a worker's head is a risk nobody has quantified.

The Queensland regulator and what a failure costs

Queensland operates under the harmonised work-health-and-safety framework, with Workplace Health and Safety Queensland — WHSQ — as the regulator. The core duty falls on the person conducting a business or undertaking to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that plant such as a truck-mounted platform is safe. Keeping the access unit maintained, inspected and certified — not just the truck registered — is how the duty is discharged.

If the machine fails seriously, WHSQ investigates, and its enquiry lands on the records: the last competent inspection of the access equipment, its maintenance history, the evidence it was fit to work. Commercially the exposure is severe even setting the human cost aside — the unit is stood down and its history combed through, work grinds to a halt, and principal contractors and insurers examine whether the plant was compliant when it let go.
