A platform earns its certification when a competent person assesses it against the standard it was built to, AS/NZS 1418.10, and the standard governing its safe use, AS 2550.10, and confirms it fit to carry a person aloft. That certification is the difference between a known machine and a hoped-for one.
Let it lapse and the machine becomes an unknown quantity. It may still be sound, or a fault may be forming in a member no operator will ever inspect — and the essential danger is that nobody can distinguish the two from the yard. In the Territory, where a competent person may be a very long way from the unit, that unknown often gets left to run for far longer than it should.
How the Territory environment attacks a machine

Why fatigue is the failure that surprises people
The kind of failure that puts an operator at risk is rarely a sudden overload. It is fatigue — a crack that began at a stress concentration such as a weld toe or a boom pivot and has crept longer with every cycle of raising, slewing and travelling the machine has done.
Each increment of growth is far too small to notice, and the crack advances under the surface or beneath paint where nothing reveals it. The member stays intact until the remaining sound metal cannot hold the load, then separates without the gradual warning people instinctively expect. That abruptness, at height, is what makes fatigue the danger it is.
A visual check is not a safety net here
Operators should absolutely check their machine before use, but a walk-around cannot find a fatigue crack, because the cracks that matter are hidden below the surface or under coatings.
Detecting them depends on the layered inspection regime and its deepest tier, the major inspection — due at five years or ten years depending on the equipment class — where critical welds and members are exposed and non-destructive testing is applied to reveal what no visual pass can. That is how a hidden crack becomes a documented, measurable finding. An uncertified platform has simply not had that assurance performed, so its structure is unproven for whatever it is asked to lift next.
Distance turns a maintenance gap into a real hazard
When machines are scattered across the Territory's enormous distances, the practical friction of getting a competent person to each unit is what quietly lets certification lapse and servicing slide. A platform on a remote site can go a long way past its due dates simply because arranging the visit is hard.
The dependable answer is to plan around each machine's due dates well ahead, grouping units that fall due together so a single trip covers them and no platform is left running on trust. NT WorkSafe and what a serious incident triggers
The Northern Territory is part of the harmonised model work health and safety scheme, and NT WorkSafe is the regulator. The duty is outcome-based: a business must ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that the plant its workers use is safe — and a machine whose safety cannot be demonstrated fails that standard on its face.
Where a serious incident occurs, NT WorkSafe can investigate, and the platform is stood down while its certification and maintenance history are scrutinised.
