Electric vs Diesel Scissor Lift: Choosing the Right One

Electric and diesel scissor lifts suit different environments. This guide compares them on indoor versus outdoor use, floor loading, ground conditions and emissions considerations.

Scissor lifts come in two broad power types — electric and diesel (or engine-powered rough-terrain) — and choosing between them is really a question about where and how the machine will work. An electric scissor is built for clean, level, indoor work; a diesel rough-terrain scissor is built for outdoor sites and uneven ground. Put one in the other's environment and you either compromise safety and floors or leave capability on the table. This guide compares the two on the factors that genuinely decide the choice: indoor versus outdoor use, floor loading, ground conditions and emissions considerations.

The fundamental split

Electric scissor lifts run on battery power, are generally more compact and lighter, and are designed to operate on firm, level surfaces — the classic indoor machine. Diesel or engine-powered scissors are typically larger, heavier, rough-terrain machines built for outdoor sites with uneven or unsealed ground and greater platform height and capacity.

Almost every other difference flows from that split. The right question is not which is 'better' but which matches the surface, the environment and the emissions constraints of the work.

Indoor versus outdoor use

Match the power type to the environment:

  • Indoor work — warehouses, retail fit-outs, facilities, clean floors — strongly favours an electric scissor, which produces no exhaust emissions at the point of use and runs quietly.
  • Outdoor and rough-terrain work — construction sites, unsealed yards, uneven ground — favours a diesel or engine-powered rough-terrain scissor built for those conditions.
  • Mixed environments may need both, or a machine specified carefully for the dominant condition.

Emissions and ventilation rules

Emissions are often the deciding factor for indoor work. An engine-powered machine produces exhaust that is unacceptable in an enclosed space without adequate ventilation and controls, which is why electric machines dominate indoor use. Sites also set their own rules — many enclosed or occupied environments simply prohibit combustion-engine machines indoors.

The practical guidance is to check the site's requirements and any applicable air-quality and ventilation controls before choosing. Where work is enclosed or occupied, an electric machine is usually the only appropriate answer; outdoors, emissions are managed differently and a diesel machine is workable.

Floor loading and ground conditions

Weight is a serious and often overlooked consideration. A diesel rough-terrain scissor is substantially heavier than a comparable electric machine, and driving one onto a suspended floor, mezzanine or slab without checking the floor loading capacity can exceed what the structure is designed to carry.

  • For indoor and suspended floors, confirm the floor loading limit and choose a machine — usually electric — whose weight sits safely within it.
  • For outdoor sites, assess the ground: an electric machine needs firm, level ground, while a rough-terrain diesel machine is designed to cope with uneven and softer surfaces.
  • Consider tyres and drive: rough-terrain machines have the traction and ground clearance that a smooth-tyred electric machine lacks.
  • Never assume a machine that fits the height requirement also suits the surface — the surface can rule a machine out on its own.

The same compliance regime applies to both

Whichever power type you choose, a scissor lift is an EWP under AS 2550.10 and carries the full tiered inspection regime: operator pre-starts, routine and periodic inspections, and a major inspection due against the machine's age. The major inspection interval is set by the equipment class and the relevant standard — it may fall on a 5-year or a 10-year cycle depending on the machine — so confirm the interval for your specific unit.

Power type does not change the safe-use obligations; it changes only where the machine is fit to work. Both need the same discipline of pre-starts, logbooks and competent-person inspections to stay compliant.

Choosing with confidence

Decide by describing the environment: indoor or outdoor, the floor or ground it must work from, the site's emissions rules, and the height and capacity needed.
