Wind is the environmental factor that catches out more access crews than any other, because a still morning can turn into a gusty afternoon while the platform is at full height. Read the machine's rated limit, not a rule of thumb
There is no single wind speed that applies to every access machine, and guessing one is a mistake. The maximum wind in which a given unit may be operated is set by its manufacturer and shown on the platform decal and in the operator manual for that model.
That rating is specific to the machine's design — its height, boom geometry, platform size and counterweight all feed into it — so the figure on one unit does not carry across to another. Before a windy shift, the operator's job is to find that decal, know the number, and stop using the machine once conditions reach it. The rating is a hard limit, not a target to nudge up against.
Wind does more than the anemometer shows
The rated limit assumes a fairly clean airflow, and real sites rarely deliver that. A steady breeze at ground level can be amplified around buildings, funnelled between structures, or arrive as sharp gusts that momentarily exceed the average.
- Gusts, not averages, are what upset a platform — a mean speed comfortably under the limit can still hide peaks that reach it.
- Buildings and terrain channel and accelerate wind, so the platform at height can sit in a much stronger flow than the crew feels below.
- Loads and materials on the platform, along with the occupants themselves, add sail area the rating did not assume.
- Attachments such as boards, panels or signage act like a sail and dramatically increase the force the wind can apply.
Indoor-rated machines are a separate case
Some access machines — commonly lightweight vertical-mast and certain electric units — are rated for indoor use only and carry no allowance for wind at all. Their design assumes a still, enclosed environment, and their stability calculations simply do not include an outdoor wind load.
Taking an indoor-rated machine outside, even on a day that feels calm, moves it outside the conditions it was engineered and tested for. The decal will state the restriction, and it must be respected. Planning the work around the weather

- Check the forecast, including the expected gust strength and the timing of any change, before committing to the day's plan.
