What is a man lift or vertical mast lift?
A vertical mast lift — also called a man lift, manlift, personnel lift, personal vertical lift, or one-man lift — uses a telescoping vertical mast to lift a single operator to working height. The platform moves straight up and straight down; there is no boom, no horizontal offset, and no articulation. This simplicity makes them the most compact and lightest access equipment in the MEWP category.
Working heights for vertical mast lifts typically range from around 4m to 12m. The smallest models — sometimes called push-around lifts or non-powered vertical lifts — are manually moved between positions rather than self-propelled, making them extremely lightweight and usable on sensitive floors. Stock pickers and order pickers
Stock pickers and order pickers are vertical mast lift variants configured for warehousing and logistics applications. A stock picker elevates a single operator to pick items from high storage racking, combining the vertical mast lift mechanism with controls that allow fine positioning at height. Battery-operated personnel lifts add electric drive for self-propulsion, allowing the operator to drive the machine to its work position from the platform.
For building maintenance, retail store maintenance, light commercial fitout and indoor ceiling work at heights under 10m, push-around lifts and compact self-propelled personnel lifts are frequently more efficient and less intrusive than a scissor lift.
When to choose a vertical mast lift over a scissor lift
- Floor sensitivity: vertical mast lifts are lighter and have smaller wheel contact patches than scissor lifts — less risk of floor damage on sensitive surfaces.
- Tight access: vertical mast lifts are narrower than even the narrowest scissor lift — useful in aisles, corridors and spaces a scissor lift cannot enter.
- Single-person tasks: if the job genuinely needs only one person with hand tools, a vertical mast lift is simpler and more manoeuvrable than a scissor lift for two.
- Low-height tasks: for work under 8m, a compact personnel lift is quicker to deploy and reposition than a scissor lift.
- Wheeled plant restrictions: some sensitive indoor environments (data centres, clean rooms, showrooms) impose strict weight and floor contact restrictions that exclude scissor lifts but permit lightweight vertical lifts.
