MEWP vs EWP: Terminology Explained for Australian Operators

Anyone working around access equipment in Australia quickly runs into a tangle of acronyms — EWP, MEWP, EWP, aerial work platform — often used to describe the very same machine. The overlap is harmless most of the time, but it causes real confusion when reading standards, specifying equipment or checking what a credential covers. This guide sorts out the terminology, explains where each term comes from, and shows why the distinctions matter less than the machine class in front of you.

The terms you'll hear

Several terms circulate for the same broad category of equipment, and they are largely interchangeable in everyday use. The differences are mostly about which document or which part of the industry you are talking to, not about fundamentally different machines.

The common terms and what they mean:

  • EWP — 'elevating work platform', the term most widely used in Australian industry and in AS 2550.10.
  • MEWP — 'mobile elevating work platform', emphasising that the machine is mobile; used in the standards and internationally.
  • Elevated work platform — a plain-language phrasing of the same idea, common in general conversation and job specs.
  • Aerial work platform — a term more common internationally, particularly in North America, for the same broad category.

EWP and MEWP: is there a difference?

In practice EWP and MEWP refer to the same machines, and the terms are used interchangeably across Australian industry. The 'M' in MEWP simply makes explicit that the platform is mobile — mounted on a chassis, self-propelled or vehicle-mounted rather than a fixed installation. Because virtually all the access machines in question are mobile, the distinction rarely changes anything in daily use.

You will see MEWP used heavily in the standards themselves — AS 2550.10 and AS 1418.10 both use it — while EWP dominates in general industry speech. Reading one where you expected the other is not a sign of a different machine; it is the same equipment under a slightly more formal name.

Why the machine class matters more than the acronym

The genuinely important distinctions are not between the acronyms but between the types of machine the acronyms cover. A scissor lift, a vertical mast lift, an articulating boom, a telescopic boom, a spider lift and a truck-mounted platform are all EWPs — yet they differ enormously in how they work, what they can reach, how they are inspected and even what credential an operator needs to use them.

The classes that sit under the EWP/MEWP umbrella include:

  • Scissor lifts and vertical mast lifts — platforms that rise vertically.
  • Articulating (knuckle) boom lifts — booms that bend to reach up and over obstacles.
  • Telescopic boom lifts — straight booms prioritising horizontal and vertical reach.
  • Spider lifts — compact, tracked, outrigger-stabilised machines for constrained access.
  • Truck-mounted platforms and cherry pickers — an access machine mounted on a road vehicle.

Where the terminology actually bites

The one place terminology genuinely matters is credentials and standards, and there the relevant line is drawn by machine type, not by acronym. Operator credential requirements in Australia turn on the class and boom length of the specific machine rather than on whether someone calls it an EWP or a MEWP. An elevating work platform is defined by lifting a person on a platform to a work position. Cranes are close relatives within the same AS 2550 family of standards but are lifting rather than access machines. Terminology and the standards you'll read

When you turn to the Australian Standards themselves, the terminology settles down. The safe-use standard for these machines is AS 2550.10, and the design-and-manufacture companion is AS 1418.10 — both using MEWP as the formal term. Knowing that the standard's 'MEWP' is your yard's 'EWP' means you can read the compliance documents without second-guessing whether they apply to your machine.

This matters because the standards are where the real obligations live — the inspection regime, the competent-person requirement, the logbook. An operator who is comfortable that the terminology is just different labels for the same equipment will engage with those obligations directly rather than being put off by the language. The words vary; the responsibilities do not.
