Common Mistakes When Buying a Cherry Picker Truck

Buying a cherry picker truck means buying two machines at once — a road vehicle and an access platform bolted to it — and most mistakes come from judging one while ignoring the other. Here are the errors truck-mounted EWP buyers repeat, and how to avoid them.

Buying a cherry picker truck trips up buyers in a way a self-propelled machine rarely does, because a truck-mounted EWP is really two assets sharing one chassis: a road vehicle with its own wear story, and an access platform whose condition is what actually decides whether it is safe to lift a person. Focus on one and you buy the other blind. This guide sets out the mistakes people make most often when purchasing a truck-mounted elevating work platform, written for buyers who want to know what to scrutinise before they hand over a deposit. Are you judging the truck by the cab and the odometer alone?

The most common mistake is buying the truck the way you would buy any used vehicle — sizing it up by the tidiness of the cab, the reading on the odometer and how it drives around the block. Those things matter for the road side of the asset, but a low-kilometre truck can carry a hard-worked platform, and a comfortable cab tells you precisely nothing about the boom above it.

A cherry picker truck earns its living from the access gear, and the access gear ages on its own schedule driven by lifts, slews and duty cycles rather than distance travelled. Judge the whole machine by the cab and the odometer and you have assessed the part that is least likely to hurt someone while ignoring the part that decides whether the platform is safe in the air.

What subframe, pedestal and outrigger condition gets missed?

The second mistake is skating past the interface between the truck and the access equipment — the parts that are unique to a truck-mounted unit and easy to overlook precisely because a car buyer would never think to check them.

On a truck-mounted EWP, pay particular attention to:

  • The subframe that ties the access equipment to the chassis, where cracked welds, fretting or corrosion can develop where the two structures work against each other.
  • The pedestal or turntable that carries the boom, and the fasteners holding it down, which can loosen or corrode where road grime collects.
  • The outriggers or stabilisers and their feet, rams and interlocks, which set up the whole machine and are punished by repeated deployment on rough ground.
  • The mounting points and load-bearing brackets, where old repairs or added holes can quietly reduce the strength the design relied on.

Does a current registration mean the access gear is compliant?

The third mistake is assuming that because the truck is registered and roadworthy, the access platform on its back is compliant too. They are entirely separate questions answered by entirely different processes. Registration speaks to the vehicle's fitness for the road; it says nothing about whether the boom has been examined by a competent person, whether its certification is current, or whether the load-holding systems still hold.

A truck can carry current plates and a perfectly presentable body while the platform above it is well past due for a proper examination. Never let the vehicle's road status stand in for evidence about the access equipment. Ask specifically for records covering the platform as plant, and treat their absence as a gap to close before purchase.

Why does a truck's transport history change the picture?

The fourth mistake is ignoring what a life on the road does to an access structure. Unlike a machine that lives on one site, a truck-mounted EWP is driven, and every kilometre feeds vibration and jolting into a boom, a pedestal and a subframe that were designed to work hard when planted but simply endure the trip in between. That transport duty accumulates its own fatigue, concentrated at the mounts and the joints between the vehicle and the access gear.

A buyer who thinks only about hours in the air misses this second source of wear entirely. A unit that has covered long distances between jobs has a fatigue story written by the road as well as by lifting, and that story lives in exactly the interface structures the previous section flagged. Ask how the machine was used and where it travelled, and let the answer guide how closely those joints are examined.

Can you trust the insulation rating on an insulated unit?

The fifth mistake applies to insulated cherry picker trucks — the kind marketed for work near live conductors — and it is assuming the insulation still performs simply because the machine was built insulated. Insulating properties are not permanent; contamination, moisture ingress, damage and ageing can all degrade them over a working life, and none of that is visible from the ground.

Buying an insulated unit on the strength of its original specification, without current electrical testing to confirm the insulation actually still does its job, is a serious assumption to make about a machine intended to protect a worker near electricity. If a unit is being sold on its insulated capability, that capability needs to be demonstrated by present-day testing, not inferred from the badge it wore when new.

How an independent inspection protects a cherry picker truck purchase

Every mistake here comes from assessing one half of the machine and trusting the other. The way through is an independent examination that treats the cherry picker truck as what it is — a road vehicle carrying an access platform — and scrutinises the parts that make it different: the subframe, the pedestal, the outriggers, the transport-fatigued joints, and, where relevant, the insulation that a badge alone cannot vouch for.
