What Not to Do When Your EWP Fails an Inspection

When your EWP fails an inspection, the instinct to defer, argue or patch the finding is exactly what turns a fixable machine into a serious liability. Here is what not to do, and the professional repair-and-recertify path that gets the platform back earning.

A failed inspection on an elevating work platform lands badly. The machine you were counting on is suddenly off the job, there is pressure to keep working, and the report in your hand reads like an accusation. In that moment the wrong moves feel like the reasonable ones — defer it, get a second opinion, do a quick fix and press on. Each of those instincts makes the situation worse, not better. This guide sets out what not to do when a platform fails inspection, and why, before explaining the path that actually restores the machine to service. Why you can't just defer or ignore the finding

The most tempting mistake is to treat a failed inspection as a scheduling problem — park the finding, keep the machine working, deal with it when the job eases off. The trouble is that an inspection failure is a statement about the machine's condition right now, not a reminder that can be snoozed. The defect the inspector found does not pause while you finish the contract; if anything, continued use works it harder.

Deferring also changes your position entirely. Before the inspection, an unknown fault is a genuine unknown. Once a competent person has identified and recorded a defect, you are knowingly running a machine that has been called out as not fit — a very different thing to be doing if that machine later fails with someone aboard. The finding exists to be acted on, and the safest and simplest response is to take the platform out of service until it is resolved.

Should you get a second opinion that says what you want?

There is a world of difference between a legitimate technical review and opinion-shopping. Asking a qualified engineer to re-examine a borderline finding, with all the evidence in front of them, is reasonable — sometimes a fresh assessment genuinely changes the picture. Ringing around until someone agrees to pass a machine another inspector failed is not that. It is looking for a signature, not an answer.

The problem with a friendlier opinion is that it does nothing to the machine. The crack, the wear or the defect is still there regardless of who was persuaded to overlook it, and you now have two records that disagree — which is far harder to defend than a single failed report you acted on. If you doubt a finding, put it to an independent engineer to review the substance properly, and accept that a real review can confirm the failure just as easily as overturn it.

What's wrong with a quick patch repair?

When a platform fails on a structural or load-holding fault, the shortcut is to have someone weld, bolt or bodge it back together and carry on. On access plant this is one of the most dangerous responses there is, because the structure is engineered — its members, welds and load paths are designed as a system, and an unqualified repair can leave it looking whole while being weaker than before.

Why unsupervised patch repairs go wrong:

  • A weld laid without the right procedure or preparation can introduce a fresh stress concentration exactly where the next crack starts.
  • Substituting non-original or incorrectly rated parts changes how load travels through the structure in ways the naked eye cannot judge.
  • A repair that hides the symptom rather than addressing the cause lets the underlying fault keep growing beneath fresh paint.
  • Without engineering oversight there is no record showing the repair restored the machine to a sound condition — so it cannot be relied on afterwards.

Why 'quietly putting it back in service' is the worst move

Returning a failed machine to work off the books — no repair signed off, no re-inspection, just back on the truck and out to the job — is the response that carries the gravest exposure. It combines every earlier mistake: the defect is unaddressed, the failure is on record, and now there is a decision to override that record without evidence of any fix. If the machine then fails in use, the sequence is laid out plainly for anyone who looks.

It also erodes the one thing that protects you, which is a clean, honest history. A machine that failed, was properly repaired, and passed a documented re-inspection tells a story you can stand behind. A machine that failed and reappeared with nothing in between tells a very different one. Whatever the schedule pressure, an unofficial return to service trades a short delay now for a liability that outlasts the job.

Is it the inspector's fault the machine failed?

It is natural to resent the report and, from there, to blame the messenger — the inspector was too harsh, too cautious, looking for work. Occasionally there is a genuine dispute worth raising through a proper review. Far more often, blaming the inspector is a way of avoiding the finding, and it helps nobody. The inspector did not put the crack in the boom; they found it, which is the entire point of engaging one.

A better frame is that a failure caught in the workshop is a failure that did not happen in the field. The inspector's job is to identify the fault while it is still a line in a report rather than an incident at height, and a competent one has done you a service by stopping the machine before it stopped itself. Direct the energy into fixing the machine, not disputing the person who found the problem.

The route back to service is straightforward once the panic passes. The failed machine is stood down, the defect is diagnosed properly so the cause — not just the symptom — is understood, and any repair is carried out with engineering oversight so that how it is done, and why it restores the structure, is documented. The machine is then re-inspected and, when it genuinely meets the mark, returned to service with a record that shows exactly what happened and how it was resolved.
