They are purpose-built for working near or on energised electrical conductors, with fibreglass insulating boom sections rated to specific kV classes. Terex, Altec and Elliott are the dominant brands supplying insulated powerline EWP trucks to Australian energy networks, electrical contractors, Level 2 ASPs and powerline contractors.
These trucks are typically mounted on medium-duty or heavy-duty chassis — Isuzu FRR/FVZ, Hino GH, Mitsubishi Fuso Fighter — and carry the insulation testing documentation that must accompany the machine at all times during energised electrical work.
Non-insulated EWP trucks and cherry picker trucks
Non-insulated truck-mounted EWPs — referred to as cherry picker trucks, boom lift trucks, EWP trucks, bucket trucks, boom trucks or aerial lift trucks — do not have an insulated boom section and are not for use near live conductors. They are used across a broad range of applications including building maintenance, signage installation, arborist work, civil construction access, and any outdoor elevated access task where electrical proximity is not a concern.
Nifty Lift truck-mounted EWPs (NL122TF, NL170KTF and the wider NL range) are a popular choice in Australia for this non-insulated truck-mounted category, as are Terex and Altec non-insulated units. These machines are available on Isuzu, Hino, Ford and Mercedes-Benz chassis depending on the required payload and reach.
Telecommunications EWP trucks and NBN trucks
Telecommunications EWP trucks — also called telecoms EWP trucks, NBN EWP trucks and aerial cable trucks — are truck-mounted EWPs configured for telecommunications installation and maintenance work. They typically do not require insulation to power-line voltage ratings, but may carry partial insulation where conductors are present on shared poles.
In Australia, NBN Co contractors, Telstra network contractors and mobile network tower crews use truck-mounted EWPs extensively for pole work, aerial fibre splicing, and tower access. Elliott, Versalift and Terex truck-mounted units are commonly specified for telecommunications applications.
Arborist EWP trucks and tree-lopping bucket trucks
Arborist EWP trucks — also called arborist bucket trucks, tree-lopping EWP trucks, tree-trimming bucket trucks and vegetation management EWP trucks — are truck-mounted EWPs configured or purpose-adapted for tree work. They provide the operator with access into tree canopies without requiring the operator to climb, reducing the physical risk and improving productivity on vegetation management contracts.
Australian councils, vegetation management contractors and utility line-clearing companies use arborist EWP trucks extensively. Machines are selected for articulation capability (to position the basket around branches) and reach rather than maximum working height alone.
Traffic management and civil EWP trucks
Traffic management EWP trucks are truck-mounted elevated work platforms deployed for work above active traffic lanes — sign replacement, overhead gantry maintenance, street lighting, and roadside infrastructure. These machines are configured to Australian road work safety requirements and are commonly seen on state road authority and council infrastructure contracts.
Rail EWP trucks and road-rail EWPs
Rail EWP trucks are a specialised category of truck-mounted access equipment designed for use on or alongside active rail corridors. Road-rail EWPs can travel on both public roads and railway tracks, allowing them to access overhead wire infrastructure, bridge structures and trackside assets without the logistics of rail possession equipment.
