Mast lifts shine at repetitive, single-person work at modest height in confined spaces:
- Stock picking, replenishment and order work in warehouse racking, where the narrow base fits between aisles.

Vertical mast lift versus scissor lift
Mast lifts and scissor lifts are both straight-up-and-down machines, which is why they get mixed up, but they solve different problems. The core difference is platform size against footprint: a scissor lift gives you a larger deck that can carry more workers and materials, while a mast lift trades deck size for a much smaller, more manoeuvrable base.
- Footprint — a mast lift is typically far narrower and can reach positions a scissor lift is simply too wide to enter.
- Platform and capacity — a scissor lift offers a bigger working deck and usually a higher platform capacity for multiple people and materials.
- Weight and floor loading — mast lifts are generally lighter, which helps on floors where a heavier scissor lift would be a concern.

Why they excel indoors
Everything about a mast lift is tuned for working inside a building. The electric drive keeps the air clean, the compact base threads through doorways and around fixed obstacles, and the modest weight is kinder to slabs and suspended floors than a larger machine would be.
That said, indoor does not mean unconstrained. Floor loading still matters on suspended and upper-level floors, the machine must be kept level within its rated tolerance, and overhead hazards such as services, sprinklers and structure need checking before the platform goes up. The compact size is an advantage, not a licence to skip the set-up thinking.
Choosing and specifying a mast lift
Because the platform only travels vertically, specifying a mast lift is largely about height, capacity and getting the machine to the work.
- Confirm the working height you need and remember the platform does not reach sideways, so the base has to sit directly beneath or beside the work.
- Check the platform capacity against the operator plus any tools and stock they carry up — these are generally single-person machines with a modest load rating.
- Measure the tightest doorway, aisle and lift car the machine must pass through so the folded or stowed dimensions actually fit.
- Confirm the floor can carry the machine wherever it will be used, particularly on suspended or upper floors.
Operating and inspection basics
