Truck-Mounted EWP Major Inspection

A truck-mounted EWP is really two machines working together: an access platform bolted to a road vehicle. That combination adds a whole layer to the major inspection — the subframe that ties the unit to the chassis, the stabiliser legs that plant it on the ground, and the slew ring that lets the boom rotate under load. Ten years of driving, deploying and lifting works all of them hard, and this page is where you book the inspection that checks them.

Beyond the boom itself, we concentrate on how the platform transfers load into the truck and back into the ground. The subframe mounts, stabiliser rams and pads, and the slew bearing bolts are examined for the fatigue and movement that a road-going, frequently deployed machine develops. The aim is to confirm the entire structure — from outrigger pad to platform — is sound before recertification.

The Process

Subframe & mounting check

The subframe that ties the platform to the truck chassis is examined for cracking, corrosion and loosened mounts — the interface where road vibration and lifting loads both concentrate.

Stabiliser & outrigger strip

Stabiliser legs, rams, pads and their locking systems are dismantled and assessed, because the whole machine's stability depends on them deploying and holding correctly.

Slew ring & boom NDT

The slew bearing and its bolting are assessed for wear and integrity, and non-destructive testing is applied to the boom load path and pins.

Reassemble & recertify

Components are repaired or replaced, stabiliser and slew functions proven, and the unit load and stability tested and recertified with documentation.

Compliance & Standards

The elevating work platform on a truck-mounted unit is designed to AS/NZS 1418.10 and maintained and inspected under AS 2550.10, with the ten-year major inspection the recognised deep assessment for ageing plant in Australia. On these machines the inspection extends beyond the boom to the subframe, stabilisers and slew ring — the structure that transfers load between the platform, the truck and the ground. The vehicle's own roadworthiness obligations are separate and remain the operator's responsibility.

Common Questions

Why does a truck-mounted EWP need more than a boom inspection?

Because the platform is mounted on a road vehicle, load travels through a subframe, into stabilisers and across a slew ring — none of which exist on a self-propelled machine. Road vibration works these components as hard as lifting does, so the major inspection assesses the whole mounting and stability structure, not just the boom.

What is checked on the stabilisers and outriggers?

The stabiliser legs, rams, pads and their locking and interlock systems are dismantled and assessed. The machine's stability under load depends entirely on the outriggers deploying fully and holding, so any wear, leakage or movement in these components is safety-critical and is examined closely.

Why is the slew ring a focus?

The slew ring lets the boom rotate while carrying load, so its bearing and bolting take cyclic stress every time the operator slews. Wear or loosening there affects both stability and structural integrity, so the ring and its fixings are assessed as part of the major inspection.

Does the major inspection cover the truck itself?

The major inspection covers the elevating work platform, its mounting structure and stability systems under AS 2550.10. The truck's roadworthiness and registration obligations are separate and remain the operator's responsibility — but a sound subframe and mounting are very much part of our scope.

When is a truck-mounted EWP due?

At ten years of age, with further major inspections periodically after under AS 2550.10. It is based on the age of the platform rather than the kilometres on the truck.
