A bucket truck — the truck-mounted EWP used by utility, telco, arboriculture and facilities crews — spends its life reaching over roads, footpaths and live services, so its inspection regime has to cover far more than a routine service. We carry out independent bucket truck and utility truck EWP inspections across both insulated and non-insulated units, working to AS 2550.10 for the safe use of elevated work platforms and the wider AS 2550 series for the truck-mounted lifting equipment on the same chassis.
The inspection considers the machine as one system: the boom and its knuckle or telescoping sections, the turret and slew, the platform and levelling, the stabilisers, the hydraulic and control systems, and the interface with the host vehicle. On insulated units there is an added, safety-critical dimension — the dielectric properties that protect the crew when they work near live apparatus. The Process
Confirm the unit & duty
We record the make, model, boom configuration, host vehicle and — critically — whether the unit is insulated, because that determines whether dielectric testing forms part of the inspection.
Inspect boom, turret & platform
The boom sections, knuckle or telescope joints, turret, slew, platform, levelling and stabilisers are examined for wear, distortion, corrosion and fatigue across the load path, along with the hydraulic and control systems that raise, rotate and level the platform the operator stands in.
Test insulation where fitted
On insulated bucket trucks the dielectric components are tested so the insulation that protects crews near live apparatus is verified rather than assumed, coordinated with our dedicated electrical testing process so the mechanical and dielectric results sit in one record.
Certify & document
Function and, where warranted, load and stability testing verify performance, defects are rated by severity, and you receive the logbook entries and certification documentation the unit needs to return to service compliant.

Common Questions
Do you inspect both insulated and non-insulated bucket trucks?
Yes. We inspect both. The core structural and mechanical inspection is shared, but insulated units add a safety-critical step: the dielectric components are tested so the insulation that protects crews near live apparatus is verified. We confirm at the outset whether your unit is insulated so the scope is right, because treating an insulated truck as though it were an ordinary EWP would leave its most important protection unchecked. For a non-insulated utility truck the focus stays on the structure, hydraulics, controls and stability, but the same methodical, documented approach applies.
How is the insulation on an insulated bucket truck tested?
Through dedicated dielectric (electrical) testing that verifies the insulating properties of the boom and platform components. What standards apply to bucket truck inspections?

Does the truck's roadworthiness affect the EWP inspection?
They are separate obligations, but they overlap in practice. The EWP inspection covers the elevating work platform, its mounting and its stability systems; the truck's registration and roadworthiness remain the operator's responsibility. Because the platform is carried by the vehicle, though, we keep the sub-frame, mounting and vehicle interface in view during the inspection, since a problem there affects both the aerial device and the truck it rides on. Can you repair defects found during the inspection?
Yes. Where the inspection finds structural, hydraulic, electrical or fibreglass defects, we can arrange the repairs and re-check the unit so it returns to service in a certified condition.
