When an EWP develops a fault, owners often want to know what they are signing up for before booking the machine in. A mechanical repair is not a single action — it follows a structured process that moves from diagnosis through to documented sign-off, and understanding each stage helps you set realistic expectations around downtime, parts, and outcome.
Stage 1 — Fault diagnosis
Every repair starts with a diagnosis. A technician operates the machine and uses observation, pressure testing and visual inspection to pinpoint the root cause of the fault — not just its symptoms. Chasing a symptom without identifying the cause leads to repeat failures, so a proper diagnostic step is worth the time it takes.
For complex faults, some components may need to be partially disassembled to inspect internal parts that cannot be assessed from the outside. The technician documents findings and discusses the scope of repair with the owner before any work begins.
Stage 2 — Parts and scope agreement
Once the fault is confirmed, the technician identifies the parts and labour involved. You should receive a clear explanation of what needs replacing or rectifying and why, so you can make an informed decision. For older machines or machines where the repair cost approaches the value of the unit, the technician may raise the question of whether repair is the most practical path — that conversation is better had before work starts.
Stage 3 — Repair
With scope agreed, the repair proceeds. Mechanical EWP repairs commonly cover: boom and cylinder components, slew and drive systems, control valve assemblies, safety interlock and overload protection devices, and structural items such as pins, bushes and pivot points. The work is carried out to the relevant design and safety standards, using parts that meet the original specification.
Many repairs can be completed on-site by a mobile technician. More involved work — particularly anything requiring full disassembly or specialist equipment — is completed in a workshop.
Stage 4 — Function test and documentation
After any mechanical repair, the machine is function-tested through its full range of movement to confirm the fault is resolved and no new issues have been introduced. Safety devices and emergency controls are checked as part of this step, not as an afterthought.
The completed repair is documented in a service record that covers what was found, what was done, what parts were used, and the test results. This documentation is part of the machine's compliance history — it matters at the next annual inspection and, if the machine is ever sold, to a prospective buyer.
How long does a mechanical repair take?
Simple repairs — a failed solenoid, a worn pin and bush set, a control fault traced to a wiring issue — can often be completed in a single visit. Complex repairs involving disassembly of major components, sourcing specialist parts, or waiting on machined items may take several days.
The honest answer from any reputable repairer is: we will tell you once we have diagnosed it. Be cautious of fixed-price quotes issued before a diagnosis has been completed.
