JLG is one of the most widely run access brands on Australian sites, spanning straight telescopic booms, articulating units, scissor lifts and telehandlers. We work on JLG plant every week as an independent specialist — keeping machines compliant through inspection, servicing, repair and load testing without ever claiming a dealer badge we do not hold.
Because we work independently, how we assess a JLG machine comes down to its real condition and the Australian Standards, never a sales relationship. JLG units appear in the fleets we look after and the stock we sell, and a JLG 460SJ straight boom is in our own hire fleet — hands-on familiarity that sharpens the inspection and repair work we do.

JLG is one of the broadest fleets an inspector meets, because the badge covers straight telescopic booms, articulating booms, scissors and telehandlers — four quite different machines with four different failure patterns. Reading a 460SJ straight boom is not the same job as reading a telehandler, and an honest report treats them as the distinct pieces of plant they are.
Because these machines are so common on hire, they tend to arrive with hard hours and mixed maintenance histories. We start from the compliance plate and logbook, then assess the structure and systems that actually carry the load for that particular machine type.
What Inspectors Focus On
- Boom slide pads, wear pads and extension chains on straight telescopic units, where uneven wear shows up as boom judder and creep before it shows up as a fault code.
- Jib articulation, rotator and platform-levelling on the articulating range, so the basket sits true through the whole envelope.
- The telehandler boom, its carriage, the quick-hitch lock and the load-management electronics — read as lifting gear, not access, whenever forks are on.
- Control-circuit behaviour traced through the machine's own diagnostics, so an intermittent fault is understood rather than parts-swapped.
Maintenance Planning Notes
- Match the maintenance plan to the JLG family: a high-hour hire scissor and a telehandler doing daily lifts do not belong on the same service rhythm.
- JLG booms and scissors are self-propelled plant, and machines of that type usually reach their major inspection at about ten years; watch each unit's build date so the milestone does not land in the middle of a job.
- Where a telehandler runs multiple attachments, keep each attachment's rating and condition tracked, because the safe working load changes with what is on the carriage.
- Close out small hydraulic weeps early on high-cycle units — left alone they mask the larger wear an inspector then has to flag.
Do JLG telehandlers get inspected the same way as JLG booms?
No. A telehandler doing lifting work is assessed as lifting plant — boom, wear pads, carriage, quick-hitch lock and load-management electronics all in scope. A boom or scissor is judged on its access-platform systems instead. We report each on the correct footing rather than stretching one checklist across the whole range.
Our JLG boom is a high-hour ex-hire unit — what should we expect from an inspection?
An ex-hire JLG boom tends to arrive with genuine wear at the slide pads, extension chains and joints, plus a patchy logbook. We record the present condition, flag what must be put right for compliance, and pin down how close the unit is to its ten-year major so you can plan the work rather than be caught out by it.

Do you work on JLG telehandlers as well as booms?
Yes. JLG telehandlers get the same treatment as the booms and scissors — boom, attachment carriage and load-management systems inspected, serviced and repaired to AS 2550.10.
