Hoses on our outdoor-stored machines are cracking at the bends — is that cold-weather damage?

Yes. Hose compounds that stiffen in sub-zero temperatures lose their bend flexibility, and if the machine is moved or the hose flexes while still cold, cracks develop at the bend — typically where the hose enters a fitting or passes over a sheave. Cracked hose covers should be assessed for replacement: the cover crack is the first stage of hose deterioration, not the last.

We change fluid on a fixed schedule but Orange winters are harder on the system than we expected — should we change the interval?
