Our boom joints seem to have developed play since last winter — is that from the frost?

Thermal cycling in a high-frost environment is a known cause of progressive pin-and-bush loosening. Each expansion-and-contraction cycle moves the fit a tiny amount, and over successive winters the accumulated play becomes operationally and compliance-significant. We measure the actual play in each joint and replace the pin and bush set where it's outside the manufacturer's tolerance.

We work the apple orchards and rural facilities — do those environments create any specific structural concerns?

Rural and agricultural environments have their own specific issues: fine soil and chaff dust can get into slew rings and drive points, and high-pressure wash-downs on some facilities push water into joints that are sealed for normal conditions but not for direct water jets. We inspect with these access environments in mind and address the ingress points as part of the repair.
