Basket and Platform Damage on EWPs

The platform is where the operator stands and the last line of fall protection; here is how baskets get damaged, why guardrails and anchor points matter, and how they are repaired.

The platform is the part of the machine an operator actually stands in, which makes it the component whose integrity is most personal. Its guardrails, gate and toe boards are the physical fall protection around the person, and its anchor points are where a harness lanyard is clipped. Damage here is not abstract — a bent rail, a cracked mount or a worn anchor point directly weakens the protection keeping someone from falling. This guide covers how baskets and platforms get damaged, why every part of the cage matters, how the damage is assessed and how it is properly restored.

Symptoms of basket and platform damage

Damage to the platform and its cage shows up as:

  • Bent, dented or deformed guardrails, mid-rails or the top rail, reducing the strength of the barrier around the operator.
  • Cracks in the platform floor, the guardrail welds or the mounting that connects the basket to the boom.
  • A gate or self-closing entry that no longer latches, springs closed or sits square.
  • Damaged, worn or corroded fall-arrest anchor points, or anchor points that are loose in their mounting.
  • Damaged, missing or illegible capacity plates and decals, or a corroded, holed platform floor.

What causes platform damage

  • Impact — driving the platform into a structure, or being struck by an object or vehicle at ground level.
  • Overloading the platform beyond its rated capacity, or concentrating load against the guardrails.
  • Everyday wear and knocks from tools, materials and repeated entry and exit over a working life.
  • Corrosion, particularly to the platform floor, guardrail feet and anchor points on machines worked in wet or coastal conditions.
  • Poorly executed past repairs or unauthorised modifications to the cage.

Why every part of the cage counts

The platform is the last line of defence against a fall, so its components are safety-critical in the most direct way. Guardrails, mid-rails and toe boards are engineered to arrest a person and their tools, and a bent or cracked rail cannot be assumed to still do that. The gate is part of that barrier and has to close and latch reliably every time.

Anchor points deserve particular care because a harness is only as good as what it is clipped to. A worn, corroded or loose anchor point can fail at the very moment it is called on, so its condition and mounting are assessed as critical, not cosmetic. The capacity plate matters too — an operator cannot respect a load limit they cannot read.

How basket and platform damage is repaired

Platform repair follows the same discipline as any structural work, because the cage is structure that happens to surround a person. Guessed-at bends and cover-up welds are not acceptable on a fall-protection component.

  • Take the machine out of service and assess the full extent, including the anchor points, gate mechanism and mounting.
  • Repair cracked or bent rails and mounts to an engineered standard, or replace components where repair cannot restore them.
  • Renew damaged or worn anchor points and confirm the gate closes, latches and self-closes correctly.
  • Repair a corroded or holed floor and re-establish the anti-slip surface, then crack test repaired welds where appropriate.
  • Replace missing or illegible capacity plates and decals, and record the work in the logbook.

Protecting the platform

Careful operation avoids most platform damage — watching the cage when manoeuvring near structures, respecting the rated capacity, and not using the guardrails as a lifting point or a load rest. The pre-start walk-around is where damage should be caught, so an operator should look at the rails, gate, floor, anchor points and decals every day.

Any damage to a guardrail, gate or anchor point should take the platform out of service until it is repaired, because these are the components standing between an operator and a fall. When in doubt, do not work from it.
