On the Fraser Coast, corrosion is the thing that starts cracks. Machines working within reach of the bay carry salt-air corrosion into weld toes, pin bores and box sections years earlier than an inland machine would, and those corrosion pits become the stress concentrators where fatigue cracks begin. Crack testing is how you find that damage while it's still cheap to deal with, rather than after a crack has propagated through a load-bearing section.
